Quickly gaining recognition internationally as a fearless and versatile artist, flautist Lina Andonovska has performed in concert halls around Europe, China, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and in the market places of East Timor. Critically acclaimed for her interpretation of recently written works, Rolling Stone hailed her performance of Bun-Ching Lam’s piccolo concertino as “superbly played, (ranging) from sustained ‘somebody-please-get-that-tea-kettle’ squeaks to the flit and flutter of its beautifully lilting trills…”

Having recently returned to Europe, she leads a diverse career as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, educator and collaborator. In 2015/2016 she completed a two-month Asialink Residency bringing contemporary classical repertoire to audiences in Timor-Leste as well as collaborating with local musicians. Prior to this she was musician in residence with Crash Ensemble, Ireland’s foremost contemporary music ensemble. In 2013 she was awarded the prestigious Freedman Fellowship and with it commissioned a new work for flute and electronics by Australian composer Anthony Pateras. As a passionate performer of new music, Lina has worked with world-renowned composers Louis Andriessen, Donnacha Dennehy, David Lang, Michael Gordon, Bryce Dessner, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Thomas Ades, Brett Dean, Andrew Ford, Anthony Pateras and Larry Sitsky.

Lina has collaborated and performed with eighth blackbird, Crash Ensemble, stargaze, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), Bryce and Aaron Dessner (The National), Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire) and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. As an orchestral player she has worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (UK), Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and was co-principal flute of the Southbank Sinfonia (UK). As soloist she has performed concerti with the Southbank Sinfonia, Orchestra Victoria and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Equally at home with improvisation as well as the printed page, Lina has performed at Byron Bay Bluesfest alongside a line-up including Bob Dylan and Jethro Tull, Woodford Folk Festival and the Dreaming Festival. In 2013 she produced ‘The Meander Project’, a collaboration between the Australian National Academy of Music and Multicultural Arts Victoria that saw musicians from non-western music backgrounds join forces with the next generation of classical musicians to create a new original work.

Lina is committed to bringing art music to audiences that would not otherwise experience it. In 2011 and 2013 Lina travelled to East Timor where she assisted, facilitated and led community outreach projects and workshops that brought different music-making skills to children living in remote rural communities.

Festival credits include the BBC Proms (UK), Edinburgh International Festival (UK), City of London Festival (UK), Anghiari Festival (Italy), Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival 2013 and 2014 (USA), GAIDA Contemporary Music Festival (Lithuania), Sacrum Profanum (Poland), Sounds from a Safe Harbour Festival (Ireland), Tokyo Experimental Festival (Japan), Australian Flute Festival, Metropolis New Music Festival, and YouAreHere Festival (Aus). Lina has been artist-in-residency on three occasions at the Banff Centre, Canada and most recently musician in residence with Crash Ensemble (Ireland).

Lina has studied intensively with Michael Cox, Wissam Boustany, Margaret Crawford, Sally Walker, Virginia Taylor and Vernon Hill. She graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Music (Honours), being awarded the Transition Award from the Friends of the School of Music to enable her to self-produce her first independent recording. The year following her graduation Lina was awarded a year-long fellowship with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, performing and recording under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Recent performance credits include performances of Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh’s new opera ‘The Last Hotel’ at the Edinburgh International Festival, BINARY flute duo’s debut in Japan as part of the Tokyo Experimental Festival, recitals programmed as part of the New Music Network’s ‘mini-series’ in Melbourne, recording for ABC Classic FM’s New Music Up Late, solo recital at the 2013 Australian Flute Festival and a performance of US-based composer Bun Ching Lam’s Piccolo Concertino at the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival. Also in 2013 Lina was a recipient of an Australia Council JUMP mentorship where she spent time with eighth blackbird flutist Tim Munro, an Arts Victoria grant to initiate a new music concert series in Melbourne, held a fellowship at the Australian National Academy of Music and was a Melbourne Festival Cultural Ambassador. Lina is a founding member of ensemble CATHEXIS who’s debut performance was described as ‘expanding the listener’s acoustic/sonic experience, displaying the talent and dedication of the executants’ by The Age (Melbourne).

Awards and scholarships include grants from the Australia Council for the Arts for skills development (including ArtStart and JUMP mentorships), Ian Potter Foundation, Williamson Music Foundation, Tait Memorial Trust, Lena Karmel Honours Scholarship, Arts Victoria, ArtsACT, Spiritous (Abbotsford Convent Foundation), Freedman Classical Music Fellowship, Australian National Academy of Music Scholarship and Fellowship, Friends of the ANU School of Music Transition Award, section finalist in the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer Award (2008), winner of the ANU Chamber Music Competition (2008), grand finalist in the Australian Flute Festival competition (2007), semi-finalist in the Gisborne International Music Competition in New Zealand (2007). Lina was a sessional teacher at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music until 2015.
