To enlighten Beethoven’s quintet for piano and winds in E flat major op.16 with two of the three Piano and Clarinet sonatas from the abundant production of Johann Baptist Vanhal (Czech-Bohemian composer established in Vienne in 1762) allows us to linger on the contrasts of this end of 18th c. musical life. We can more particularly wonder there about Mozart’s musical legacy transmission. Considering Vanhal’s talent, enriched with the contribution and influence of Bohemia’s musicians, since the musical teaching was “swallowed up” by them, and who actually played a great part in molding the Austrian composer’s gift (Myslivecek) like Tobias Pfeiffer, another pedagogue from Bohemia, shaped the precocious Ludwig’s one.
