Founder and Artistic Director, Cryptic and Sonica
After graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Belfast born Cathie Boyd founded Cryptic in 1994 with the desire to create innovative performances which 'ravish the senses' for international audiences. In parallel to Cryptic, Boyd has spent over 20 years directing opera, visual classical concerts, music theatre, film and building openings. Her work has also involved numerous commissions which has included Peak Performances, New Jersey; Southbank Centre, London; Singapore Arts Festival; Aldeburgh Music Festival and Tramway Glasgow. Credits include Armstrong, Britten, Bryars, Dun, Dzinitis, Gounod, Kurtág, Kyriakides, Haddow, Holt, Marta, MacDonald, Neil Martin, Reich, Sciarrino, Shostakovich, Stockhaussen, Talbot, Varese and Viñao.
Boyd has been instrumental in providing a key platform for artists around the world by initiating the creation of Sonica in 2012 (sonic arts for the visually minded) and Cryptic Nights in 2009 (Cryptic's emerging artists programme) as well as working as the Artistic Producer on the inaugural Beckett festival, Happy Days, in Ireland. She also was made a NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) Fellow (2001-05) to develop the visual staging of music through new technologies which she premiered with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Awards include Outstanding Young Person Award, Junior Chambers of Commerce; European Woman of Achievement for the Arts; and Edinburgh Festival Fringe First.
