Tim Smithies started promoting live music in the 1980s when he ran the Early Music Network and the London Early Music Festival, he also worked at the Cheltenham Festivals and the Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy. In the recording industry he learnt his craft at Soundalive and Nimbus Records working on the Classical , World and Indian Classical Label, before forming Metronome Recordings in 1994. At Metronome he has produced over 100 Albums including Gramophone Award winning recordings with the Orlando Consort and Carole Cerasi. While he has a classical background he has promoted tours with many folk and world musicians Paco Peña, Martin Simpson, John Etheridge, Bombay Jazz, Three Daft Monkeys and recorded two folk music projects with Howard Goodall. Recent releases include Slow Frieze: piano and orchestral works of Harrison Birtwhistle; the music of Robert de Visee for theorbo with Fred Jacobs.
In 2015 he won PRS Foundation support for his new live contemporary music series "Music Out There" in venues across Cornwall, he also premiered new work by Mike Westbrook big band in the Fal River Festival and produced tours by the International Musicians Seminar . He is currently developing small scale contemporary dance projects with the NRTF and The Place
