Roomful of Teeth are a deliriously talented and daring octet formed by Ted Wells in 2009. They feature voices without adornment, and they dabble in yodelling, throat singing, Sardinian and Georgian singing, and much more. They’re capable of high-wattage blasts and feather-light sotto voce ensemble work. They weave an intricate latticework of polyphony while keeping each voice bell-clear.

The albums recorded by Roomful of Teeth read like a Rolodex of star 21st-century composers: Missy Mazzoli, John Luther Adams, Paola Prestini, Julia Wolfe, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, and Caroline Shaw (who also happens to sing in the group). Roomful of Teeth have one GRAMMY Award and more nominations. Caroline Shaw won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her ‘Partita for 8 Voices,’ a piece that appeared on the group’s 2012 debut album. Roomful of Teeth represent the pinnacle of ensemble work, the result of adventurousness paired with unparallelled musicianship.
