This session is not only relevant for a selected group of retailers and distributors, quite the contrary!
Why is it often difficult to find a certain piece of classical music online – let alone to discover a niche part of contemporary music that matches your taste, but that you until now did not even know existed?
Improving the quality and the use of metadata – descriptive information and facts about classical and contemporary music tracks and streams – is a key to making this music more accessible both in the sense of enabling users to find what they are looking for and to enable the entire chain of “music providers” to reach out to a large (potential) audience.
Being born out of a quick online survey amongst the Classical:NEXT community this interactive session invites all stakeholders to stop complaining and start addressing this issue together.
Paul Bräuer studied musicology, sinology and journalism in Berlin and Shanghai. Working for the House of World Cultures in Berlin and as a music journalist for radio and print, he specialised in classical and global music traditions. Paul has been with Piranha Arts since 2009 and in 2014 took over the position of director of communications.
Katie Ferguson is Senior Manager of Client Relations & Classical Repertoire at The Orchard. Prior to The Orchard, Katie worked for IODA and Naxos of America. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas and a MBA from Belmont University in Nashville.
Lukas is founder and CEO of Grammofy - a music streaming service for classical music. He has a background in classical music and holds an MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship from Goldsmiths, University of London. His academic and professional expertise evolves around classical music, new technologies and meta-data.
Due to the limitations of existing software for classical music, Philippe Watel decided a few years ago to develop the application "MusiCHI Suite" a HiFi player and tagger. The tools include a search engine and a huge database of composers, performers and a composition catalogue. Thanks to this venture, he became a metadata expert.
