Scherzi Musicali is one of Belgium’s most notable young ensembles dedicated to early music, particularly less known historical gems from the 17th century. Director and baritone Nicholas Achten founded this group of singers and instrumentalists in 2006 and they have since released 5 CDs. Scherzi Musicali delight in discovering new early works as well as remaining loyal to its repertoire which reflects the sacred, secular and operatic. In this Classical:NEXT Video Showcase, the ensemble presents its latest CD project, ‘ll Pianto d’Orfeo’, which explores Orpheus’ myth in a rare collection of highly sensitive music by early Baroque composers Caccini, Peri, Monteverdi, Rossi and Sartorio. In this recording, Achten, who also plays harp, theorbo, lute and harpsichord, can be seen accompanying himself, an old art form rarely practised by modern classical singers.
