Katja Šulc

Slovenian singer and songwriter blending poetry with music, at home in many genres - ranging from jazz, soul, dub to folk and world music. In the past few years she’s done well in Slovenia and also abroad, performing regionally and further - in Portugal, Spain, France, Turkey, China, Mexico, Guatemala. Her latest album KAMLISAJLAN (Casete México, 2016) is based on contemporary gypsy poetry from the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Performed in Rromani the poems are set to music using loop stations and simple, folk like melodies and chord changes, enveloped in repetitive world music rhythm patterns. Hypnotic and entrancing.

‘Kamlisajlan by Katja Šulc could easily provide a soundtrack to one of Emir Kusturica movies, spice up the atmosphere in a smoky club cellar, hypnotize a group of people set around a fire, enlighten the evening program of a more demanding radio station. This is the sound of the gypsy blues in 2016.‘ - SIGIC

‘A wonderful album of hypnotic songs combining the best of the world, folk and electronic genres.’ – beehype

‘One of the least calculating and at the same time one of the best Slovenian albums of the year.’ – Delo

‘A wonderful and convincing embodiment of original and traditional Rromani poems. The magic lies in whispering, tender chirping and murmuring that revive the original Rromani poetry in a more contemporary and amiable shape. – Radio Student
