Leonard Disselhorst, born in 1990, took his first cello lessons at the age of seven.
After being a young scholar at the Institut zur Frühförderung musikalisch Hochbegabter at the Hanover University of Music he commenced his regular studies in 2010 under Prof. Martin Ostertag at the University of Music in Karlsruhe. Since 2015 he studies with Prof. Jens Peter Maintz at the Berlin University of the Arts. Master classes with Wolfgang Boettcher, Steven Isserlis and Philippe Muller complete his musical training. As a member of the vision string quartet he takes lessons from the Artemis Quartet in Berlin.
Leonard has been performing both as a soloist and chamber musician in Germany and abroad and is a regular guest at numerous festivals such as Festspiele Mecklenburg Vorpommern, the Lucerne Festival and the PODIUM Festival. He was a member of the National Youth Orchestra and has worked with conductors such as Dennis Russell Davies, François-Xavier Roth and Sir Simon Rattle. Radio recordings were made at the SWR, NDR, rbb and Deutschlandradio Kultur.
Leonard was several times first prize winner at the Bundeswettbewerb "Jugend musiziert", and also won prizes at the 2011 International Hindemith-Competition in Berlin and recently several times at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Conservatory Competition in Berlin. He is a scholar of the Oscar and Vera Ritter-Stiftung and the Villa Musica state foundation of Rheinland Pfalz. Leonard plays on a cello of Joseph Gagliano, Naples 1720, awarded by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and also on a self-built Goffriller-Cello.
