Sara Caneva is a composer and sound artist inside a conductor. Her podium experience crossed her composing mind, leading to a special blend and care for gestures that make sounds – with the aim that immediacy and depth go together. In 2016 she won a two-years Young Artist Position at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, where she brought on stage her opera “ON-OFF” under her own baton. She got commissions from the Opera di Roma, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, CROSSROADS Festival Salzburg, a. o. and has been supported from institutions such as Kone Foundation, Land Steiermark Kultur Amt, Bogliasco Foundation, Schleswig-Holsteinisches Künstlerhaus, Ticino Musica, IEMA, Residencia de Estudiantes Madrid. Her music has been performed by groups such as the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Schallfeld Ensemble, Mdi Ensemble, MACM, NAMES Ensemble, a. o. and published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni. Nominee for the Classical:NEXT Innovation Award 2020, she pursued soundwalks and land art in many locations across Europe.
As a conductor she is shortlisted among the 12 candidates for “LaMaestra” 2020 International Conducting Competition at La Philharmonie de Paris. Among her most recent commitments, she led the Orchestra Regionale Toscana in Florence for a cicle of family concerts, and the Schallfeld Ensemble (AT) in a month-long tour, featuring the new contemporary production “Trilogy in two” along with the American singer and performer Helga Davis. She went in depth with her training in both Conducting and Composition, through masterclass with conductors such as J. Stockhammer, P. Eötvös, G. Vajda, G. Noseda, C. Metters, E. Nicotra, and G. Gelmetti at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. After debuting with L’Elisir d’amore in Orvieto in 2014, she collaborated with the Danubia Orchestra Óbuda at the Budapest Music Centre, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Sinfonietta, the Ensemble ‘900 from Accademia di Santa Cecilia, the IEMA Ensemble within the Festival Klangspuren Schwaz, the Youth Orchestra from Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, among the others.
She conducted a number of world premieres and acted considerably in the field of contemporary music. She has been the assistant conductor to V. Parisi at the MiTo festival 2015 and at the Philharmonia “M. Jora” Bacau in 2018. In 2016 she founded the Ensemble Formanti, focused on new music, of which she was conductor and artistic director until 2017. In December 2018, she conducted the final round in the “Michele Novaro” Composition Competition, taking place at the Quirinale and live-broadcasted on the Italian national radio, RAI Radio3.
