Baroque music in the Middle Kingdom is meant as a musical encounter between China and the Western world as experienced by two musicians – the Italian Lazarist Pedrini and the French Jesuit Amiot – and an audience back in the 18th century. Both men, who were diplomats and ethnomusicologists as well as musicians, made long stays at the Celestial Empire’s court in the Forbidden City, during which they taught Chinese musicians to play on western instruments, while translating Chinese melodies into European musical notation.
This program is a unique human and artistic experience, which brings together Chinese and French musicians on stage.
