The LUCERNE FESTIVAL Ark Nova is a mobile, inflatable concert hall that was initiated by Michael Haefliger, Executive and Artistic Director of LUCERNE FESTIVAL, together with the Japanese agency Masahide Kajimoto. The idea behind this innovative project was to bring encouragement and restore hope while reconstruction continues for the people living in the Tohoku Region that was affected by the catastrophic earthquake on 11 March 2011. The Ark Nova project was designed by the star Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and the British artist Anish Kapoor, planned, and finally constructed and set up in the fall of 2013. It was there, in the fall of 2013, that the Ark Nova was put to use for the first time as a musical meeting center and artistic platform. This project has attracted international attention for its spectacular artistic form as well as for its multifaceted program featuring both international and local musicians. Japanese artists as well as an array of international stars performed here from 27 September to 14 October 2013, and the opening event featured a youth orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. A total of 10,000 people visited the events held at the Ark Nova in its first year alone. An ensemble of soloists from the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA performed there in the fall of 2013 and again in November 2014. In its second year the Ark Nova was erected in Sendai, Japan, and once again it proved to be extremely successful.
For the fall of 2015 another "Ark Nova music festival" is planned for the Tohoku Region in Japan.
Die LUCERNE FESTIVAL Ark Nova ist eine mobile, aufblasbare Konzerthalle, die gemeinsam von Michael Haefliger, Intendant von LUCERNE FESTIVAL, und dem japanischen Agenten Masahide Kajimoto lanciert wurde. Die Idee war, den Menschen in der von der Katastrophe vom 11. März 2011 betroffenen Region Tohoku während des Wiederaufbaus Mut und Zuversicht zu bringen. Die Ark Nova wurde om japanischen Stararchitekten Arata Isozaki und dem britischen Künstler Anish Kapoor entworfen, geplant und letztendlich im Herbst 2013 gebaut und erstmals aufgestellt. Dort kam sie im Herbst 2013 als musikalisches Begegnungszentrum und künstlerische Plattform erstmals zum Einsatz. Das Projekt erregte internationales Aufsehen durch die spektakuläre künstlerische Form und das vielfältige Programm mit internationalen und lokalen Musikern. Vom 27.9. bis 14.10. traten 2013 sowohl japanische Künstler als auch internationale Stars auf, die Eröffnung gestaltete ein Jugendorchester unter der Leitung von Gustavo Dudamel. 10.000 Menschen besuchten die Veranstaltungen der Ark Nova allein im ersten Jahr. Ein Ensemble von Solisten des LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA trat sowohl im Herbst 2013 als auch im November 2014 dort auf. Im zweiten Jahr wurde die Ark Nova im japanischen Sendai aufgestellt und erneut äusserst erfolgreich bespielt.
Im Herbst 2015 ist ein weiteres Ark-Nova-Musikfestival in der japanischen Region Tohoku geplant.
