Womex 2023 will be held in A Coruña from October 25 to 29, as it was announced by the mayoress of A Coruña in María Pita city council. In the presentation ceremony, Inés Rey was accompanied by Alex Walter, director of Womex, Jacobo Sutil, director of the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries (AGADIC) and Xurxo Couto, deputy delegate for Culture of the Provincial Council of A Coruña.
Womex takes place every year in a different European city with projection as a tourist destination, structural capacity to host major events and an ambitious vision in its cultural policy. Inés Rey pointed out in this sense that A Coruña meets all these conditions and Womex is an unique opportunity to demonstrate it. That’is why it was chosen among very competitive applicants from all over Europe, "both for our infrastructure and cultural facilities and for our personality and cosmopolitan dimension, but also comfortable and friendly".
The director of Womex, Alex Walter, emphasized in his speech that A Coruña has everything this great meeting needs, from cultural heritage to modern equipment and spaces in the city center, as well as hotel infrastructure, so he predicted that Womex will have a very important economic impact in A Coruña.
The mayoress pointed out that with initiatives such as the one presented today, A Coruña is returning to its rightful place as one of the leading Spanish cities to host and promote events of all kinds on an international scale, as was recently demonstrated at the Spanish-German summit or with the intense musical program of the summer, with which the city has established itself as one of the great poles of tourist attraction in the north of Spain and as a city capable of hosting major events that have an impact "on our prestige, reputation and visibility, and that those values are translate into wealth generation, employment and investment attraction". Inés Rey added that Womex will once again position A Coruña as an international benchmark, in this case in the field of music and cultural diversity, contributing to weaving new networks to enrich the great platform of multiculturalism that is Womex.
Womex 2023 will gather in A Coruña from 25 to 28 October 2023 around 3,000 attendees, ranging from programmers, promoters, record companies and national and international journalists to artists arriving from all over the world in the field of folk, roots, ethnic or traditional music. It is a meeting that unites economy and culture, with intense networking days combined with events and cultural exchanges through conferences, concerts, screenings, show cases and professional meetings in one of the most influential sectors in world culture.
The director of Agadic, Jacobo Sutil, also highlighted his satisfaction that Womex is returning to Galicia, after almost 30 years in which it was held in prominent European cities. He emphasized not only what it means in terms of the projection of the city in the cultural field and the internationalization opportunity it means for Galician artists, but also the economic impact it will leave in A Coruña, estimated at around 2 million euros, taking into account the results of previous editions.
For his part, deputy Xurxo Couto pointed out the importance of A Coruña being the city that hosts this important event, to emphasize that the Provincial Council will collaborate in every way possible to achieve the greatest success. "This event will put Galician culture on the world map and we will all be looking at A Coruña that week in October", Couto stressed, to move forward that all administrations will work hard to achieve maximum positioning and visibility.
