Described as “magnetic … impressive” (Houston Chronicle) and “agile and terrifically talented” (Boston Herald), marimbist Fumito Nunoya is gaining recognition internationally as one of today’s leading marimbists. Born in Odate, Japan, he currently lives in Germany. He is currently teaching marimba at the Hochshule für Musik Detmold in Germany and Kyoto City University of Arts. In addition to performances in Germany and around Europe, he regularly travels to perform in Japan and the USA.
His debut CD “Red Dragonfly” was called a “monumental CD” (Percussive Notes) and “an example of artistic music making at its highest level” (PAS—Florida Chapter newsletter), and his second CD “The Sower” was released in August 2013 from Octavia Records, Japan. In August 2016, he released two CDs (“Piazzolla on Marimba” and “Classics on Marimba”) from Oehms Classics, and the both CDs received special commendation awards from Record Geijutsu Magazine in Japan. His latest CD "Concertos on Marimba," released from Oehms Classics in February 2019, received a "Gouden Label" Award from Klassiek Centraal Belgium and 5 stars on BBC Music Magazine.
Mr. Nunoya gained international attention when he became a prize winner at the 3rd World Marimba Competition in Germany. He also won top prizes at many other national and international competitions including 1st Prize at the Ima Hogg Young Artists Competition, 1st Prize at the 3rd Libertango International Competition, and 2nd Prize at Percussive Arts Society International Marimba Competition.
Mr. Nunoya is an Adams Marimba Artist, and his signature mallets will be available from Pearl/Adams Japan.
