In April 2009, IBLA Grand Prize Competition Winner George King successfully performed in a tour the USA playing his own Piano Etudes, culminating in a performance at the Carnegie Hall in New York.
In 1996 George was awarded the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Musician of the year, which resulted in performances in the Edinburgh, Manchester and Brugges Jazz Festivals.
In 1999 George was awarded a scholarship to study Piano, Composition and Conducting at the Royal College of Music in London with John Barstow and Edwin Roxburgh. During his time there George won many prizes, including the Contemporary and French piano prizes. As well as numerous classical concerts and jazz performances, George has taken part in many recordings. He has recorded works by Nitin Swaney, Joanna Macgregor and Edwin Roxburgh.
In 2003 George performed a live improvised recital at the Warehouse in London, which was recorded on their own label. In March 2005 George took part in the final of the International Jazz Piano Competition in Moscow. He was the only UK competitor chosen for this prestigious competition most of which was shown on Russian television and radio.
In January 2006 George made his London Southbank debut at the Purcell Room playing works by Boulez, Lindberg and his own Etudes in a concert which has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on numerous occasions.
Also in 2006, George was chosen to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead project in Washington D.C, studying and playing with many great American Jazz musicians including Curtis Fuller, George Cables and Billy Taylor. This culminated in performances of his own compositions at the Kennedy Centre (all of which were broadcast on American television, radio and over the internet) in Washington and the Cannonball Adderley Jazz Festival in Philadelphia.
As a composer, George has had his works performed in the USA (broadcast on television and radio), Russia (broadcast on television and radio) and the UK (broadcast on BBC Radio 3). George composes for many different forces and his output includes orchestral works, compositions for jazz big band and many smaller works. A CD will be released later this year with some of his compositions included on the Warehouse record label. In 2008, George was chosen as a finalist for the Ibla Grand Prize Competition held in Sicily. He won the composition prize for his Piano Etudes. 2008 also saw the debuts of two of George's latest bands ( a Quintet and Trio) at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester playing his original compositions.
George has also acted as Musical Director on Birmingham Rep's touring production of The Snowman since 2006. He has also played in many West End and Touring shows.
