Born in Luanda, taken to Lisbon as a child, then growing up with foster parents in a small village in Alsace, Lúcia de Carvalho's itinerant upbringing necessitated the assimilation of contrasting cultures. Her reconnection to her roots was sparked when a Brazilian band played in her village. She joined the band, Som Brasil, and spent ten years assimilating the Afro-Brazilian Lusophonic connections. In 2008, she began to write her own songs and met French bassist/guitarist Edouard Heilbronn, starting a personal and productive partnership that in 2016 saw them travelling to Salvador de Bahia to record tracks for the album Kuzola, and on to a pilgrimage to Lisbon and Angola, where she reunited with her birth mother after twenty years, an emotional and joyful journey beautifully documented in the award-winning film of the same name.
