Powerplant is an inspiring collaboration of British artists, comprising Joby Burgess’ percussion, xylosynth and electronics with sound design by Matthew Fairclough and visuals by Kathy Hinde. The collective made its debut in 2005, with a sell-out performance at the Southbank Centre, London and has since performed extensively throughout the UK, Europe and beyond.

Currently touring its latest album 24 Lies Per Second (2012, Signum Records), Powerplant has created an experimental sound, which fuses driving minimalism and electronica with original video. Commissions from Graham Fitkin and Max de Wardener alongside revitalised tape works by Conlon Nancarrow and Steve Reich, are linked by the use of sampling and mechanical processes.

Powerplant’s debut album - ‘a must for anyone surfing the sine waves and all things electronica’ Muso Magazine - includes remixes of Kraftwerk featuring the Elysian Quartet alongside Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint. Released in 2008 on Signum Records, ‘Burgess transfers it to a xylosynth, to a create a glinting, chiming soundworld that seems perfectly judged for Reich’s canonical writing.’ The Guardian.

Import/Export - suite for global junk is Burgess’ landmark collaboration with Gabriel Prokofiev. Released in 2010 on Nonclassical Records with remixes by artists such as Murcof and a DVD of performances, interviews and documentaries; it was described by The Wire as ‘pollution as a sound source, recycled to maximum effect’ .

Notable performances during 2013 included: Steve Reich in Glasgow at Glasgow Royal Concert Halls; 24 Lies Per Second at Spitalfields Festival, London; Port Festival and OdeGand By Night as part of the Gent Festival, Belgium. 2014 sees a major new commission from Will Gregory - best known as a songwriter and the lead keyboards/synthesizer player and producer of the electronic music group Goldfrapp.
